Integrated IT Solutions News April 2014
Microsoft XP support has now ended

On April 8th, Microsoft officially terminated support for several products, the most common of which are Windows XP, Office 2003 and Exchange Server 2003. This means that these products will no longer receive security updates or hotfixes. While it is impossible to predict exactly what will happen, most industry experts agree that there will be a sharp increase in the number of attacks launched against these products, because the attackers will know that any vulnerabilities found and exploited will remain open.

Another consequence of this transition is that it no longer be possible to obtain any form of support from Microsoft for these products. This severely limits what any IT services organization – ourselves included – can do to help when problems arise.

We must encourage, in the strongest possible terms, anyone who is still using systems based on these products to take immediate action and plan an upgrade. Do not hesitate to let us know how we can help.

Heartbleed bug information

On Monday, April 7, a critical security vulnerability was allowed in versions 1.0 through 1.0.1f and 1.0.2 beta of the OpenSSL open source project. Known as the 'Heart bleed bug', this vulnerability allows a successful attacker to retrieve information from the memory of a web server using the affected code. This could include sensitive data such as passwords, credit card numbers and social security numbers.

It was determined that the vulnerability has been present in the OpenSSL code base for over two years, and the exploit leaves no traces. Even though it was 'discovered' only a week ago and reported only two days ago, there is no guarantee that no one discovered it before and has exploited it. With such a long window and in consideration of its widespread use, you should assume that any passwords you use at public websites have been compromised.

You can see a list of affected websites here.
