Important Cryptowall update

CryptoWall 3.0: Recently we have seen increasing evidence of a new variant of this cryptographic ransomware.

Dubbed CryptoWall 3.0, it exploits vulnerabilities in the computer under attack to escalate privileges and achieve administrative access to system resources. It is then able to circumvent the safeguards we put in place to mitigate the risk associated with previous versions of cryptography-based threats.

It is very important to stress to all your users that they should exercise care when browsing the Internet (avoid going to unfamiliar sites) and reading email. If they suspect they have the virus, immediately shut the PC off and call us.

It is also crucial to make sure your backups are working properly. The only way in which we can guarantee you get any data back after a cryptographic malware attack, is when we restore it from a good backup.

Data Security reminders

It's nearly impossible to stay ahead of the hackers. But here are some helpful data security reminders.

1. Build the business around security. Security needs to be built into every aspect of a business. Establishing security controls often becomes more complicated the longer businesses wait, so always keep security in mind.

2. Strengthen every link in the chain. It only takes one weak component to destabilize a whole business. Train every single employee to have security awareness.

3. Build this awareness into your continuity plan. If "security response" hasn't been rolled into the continuity plan, do so immediately.

4. Invest in security. Just like any other part of a business plan, security needs to be budgeted. Attackers often have the latest tools and adapt quickly, so invest in the latest technology.

Windows 2003 End of Life Countdown: 120 Days

Time is ticking! After July 14, Microsoft will no longer issue security updates for any version of Windows Server 2003. If you are still running Windows Server 2003, you need to take steps now to plan and execute a migration strategy to protect your infrastructure.

By migrating to Windows Server 2012 R2, Microsoft Azure or Office 365, you can achieve improved performance, reduced maintenance requirements, and increased agility and speed of response to the business.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Office 365 for Android tablet now available

Office for Android tablet has recently been released by Microsoft and it is available at the Google play store. It can be installed on tablets running Android KitKat 4.4 with a minimum screen size of 7 inches and an ARM-based processor.

The first thing you'll be asked to do when you launch any of the apps is to sign up or log in to your Microsoft account -- that's the only way you can edit, save or print documents. It's a small price to pay for the free apps. You can store your files either locally on your device, on your Microsoft OneDrive account, at a SharePoint location or on Dropbox.
